Music Video Timelines

Music Video -  Set up Timeline

Otis by JAY Z and Kanye

For this task I had to create a timeline that sectioned the lyrical verses spoken by each artist, then I had to briefly state the different set ups used for the scenes. This task allowed me to understand the structure of the music video, as I had to analyse the scenes through a technical and practical viewpoint.

The music video I created the timeline for is linked below:

Music Video - Set up Timeline 2

American idiot by Green Day

In Green Day's American Idiot music video there are nine different setups located in a warehouse, this limited setting is fully utilised as the video captures enticing camera shots showing the band members dancing, lip syncing and gooey green slime streaming from the speakers and an American flag. All of these visuals create an exciting adrenaline filled atmosphere that fits alongside the tempo of the music.

The intense visuals of flashing lights shining on the band members in the dark while green goo is splattered across them reflects the gritty and stimulating tone of the song, this allows the viewer to feel as though they are witnessing the climax of the song, as the visuals built up from the artists performing, to goo streaming, to then lastly witnessing them become fully immersed and indulged in the goo.

Near the end of the video, the cuts between the shots becomes faster, intensifying the tone and pace of the song, allowing the viewer to be immersed into the music and performance as it fastens. To conclude, having a variety of footage and sharp editing is key to capturing the tone and feel of the song, even if the budget or location is limiting. As these two elements allow the viewer to be captivated and entertained.

Improved version of the timeline - includes time stamps of verse, chorus and guitar solo.
