Directed by Mezzy

https://www.wedirectmusicvideos.com/individual-treatments/lil-peep-girls-directed-by-mezzy

Slides - The first slide briefly states the opening visual for the music video, it depicts a wide shot of a trans woman leaning against a balcony in daylight with reference images to reinforce the director's visual idea.

The second slide states the next visual for the music video, it describes a different woman sitting in a bathroom, smoking a cigarette surrounded by polaroids and a blow up flamingo as she sits alone contemplating a thought. The slide also includes three reference images to reinforce the director's vision.

The third slide describes two different girls staring at the camera while sitting on a love seat, then states how there is a match cut to another shot of two flamingos. This slide includes two reference images for the costume of the girls and two reference images showing a pair of flamingos to reinforce the director's vision.

The fourth slide states the artist's positioning in the shot, it describes how Peep will lip sync to the song and lie down on his back facing towards the ceiling into the camera's view point with four girls surrounding him 'fitting like piece in a puzzle'. This slide also includes reference images from films of the shot type the director wants to capture.

The fifth slide briefly states how the director wants Peep to be sitting up in the next visual and to continue lip syncing while four flamingos stand in front of him. The director has also included visual images of shot types that reflect the style of cinematography he wants to capture in this scene.

The sixth slide describes how he wants Peep to be sitting with the girls in the second visual on the loveseat as he smokes a blunt, while the girls stare at the flamingos then look simultaneously at Peep. This slide includes five reference images of shot types the director envisions for this scene.

The seventh slide describes how Peep will be in the bathroom checking his eye with a subtle distorted effect as he does this, then Peep will stare at the polaroids stuck in the mirror. The director has included three reference images depicting people from films pulling their eyelids down, two images feature actors doing this while looking into a mirror to reinforce their depiction of the scene.

The eight slide describes Peep standing on the balcony in a turtle neck surrounded by a hue pink sky with flamingos on each side of the balcony. The slide also includes one reference image of Peep's costume, three reference images of Peep's standing position and one reference image of the pink skyline. All images reflect the director's specific enviusonemnt of the scene.

The ninth slide describes a man known as Horsehead (producer of the song) in a white outfit on a balcony with a girl while Peep is being kissed by two other girls as a polaroid of all of them is taken. The slide includes reference images, two depicting the director's idea for the producer's costume, and two depicting the environment of the scene that the director wants to capture.

The tenth slide describes Horsehead in a bathtub as a woman shaves his head, the director has put two reference image depicting a mid frame of the shot. This slide also includes the final shot of the music video showing Peep standing on the balcony as curtains blow in the wind then cut to black. The slide for this shot has two reference images of figures standing at a distance on a balcony, reinforcing the director's vision for the final shot.

Lastly, the treatment features four visual references of both short films and music videos that inspire and capture a similar narrative and style the director wants to create for Lil Peep's music video.

What works well in the treatment? - The simplistic breakdown of shot references and descriptions work well in the treatment as the visuals are easy to breakdown and understand, allowing the viewer to be immersed into the director's vision for the music video.

What was most effective? - The most effective part of Mezzy's treatment for me was the visual references of shot types, costume and actions. I found the references to be clear and they made it easy for me to envision the scope of the video.

Music Video - Can't stop by Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Directed by Mark Romanek

https://www.wedirectmusicvideos.com/individual-treatments/2019/12/2/cant-stop-red-hot-chili-peppers-directed-by-mark-romanek

Slides - The treatment for the Red hot Chilli Pepper's music video is made up of twelve brief notes on one slide. Romanek's first note states how the music video will be a perform piece of the band and the shots will be cut up with visuals of art work by an artist called Erwin Wurm. The second note details the setting of the music video where the band will be based. The third note describes how the director wants the images to be 'dry' while also capturing the band's high energy.

The fourth note describes the everyday objects/props the director's wants in the music video and the fast pace he wants to capture using these images. The fifth note states how the only visible colour in the music video will be monochrome. The sixth note states the director's vision for the music video to have a fun energy with 21st art-world sensibility. The seventh note describes how the director wants certain shots to have an innocent blaśe feeling to them. The director states in the eighth note that he wants the setting to be minimalistic.

The ninth note states how the Romanek wants to create a lighting that is pleasing, not flashy. The tenth note describes the set-up of the music video, Romanek states how he wants 'distinct parts'. In the eleventh note the director describes how he wants blooper scenes to be included into the video to make it more humorous. Lastly, the twelfth note the Romanek simply two he wants 'the final effect to be sexy, magical and refreshing.'

What works well in the treatment? -  The simple and clear brief notes for Romanek's treatment work well as he has stated the different elements he wants to incorporate while also making them straightforward and to the point, allowing the reader to understand his vision for the music video in a direct manner.

What was most effective? - The most effective part of Romanek's treatment was the way he structured it, as each note breaks down the style, pace, energy and lighting forming a full 360 view of his vision for the video.

Music Video - Heart by Lil Tracy

Directed by Mezzy

https://www.wedirectmusicvideos.com/individual-treatments/lil-tracy-heart-directed-by-mezzy

Slides - The first slide briefly states how Mezzy wants the music video to be simple and cinematic. The second slide of the treatment shows five reference images with no descriptive meaning.

The third slide describes Mezzy's opening vision for the music video, he states how a hooded figure carrying a switchblade walks into frame, the scene cuts to shots of CCTV cameras. The artist is lip syncing to the camera. The fourth slide is a colleague of reference images, one close up of the artist, a man in the back of a car with a woman and two images of gold glistening lingerie. These images show the director's vision for the music video's setup.

The fifth slide details Mezzy's setup reference images shown in the previous slide e.g close up of Tracy cut to him sitting in car with women in lingerie. The sixth and seventh slide are reference images of Tracy on top of a car and a woman surrounded by Chanel bags. The eight slide details the meaning behind he reference images, e.g Tracy sits on car, designer bags surround him, two girls go through these bags and a bright light shines through them.

The next three slides are reference images, one depicts a girl holding a flower in the dark crying, the second depicts a night setting, the third captures a faceless figure out of focus in the dark. The next slide describes these images inspiration and Mezzy's vision of having Tracy being photographed with a girl in a parking lot as a Jaguar car does donuts behind them. Through the perspective of CCTV the Jaguar pulls up, Tracy exits the car carrying a switchblade, he 'heads to the studio to strangle the emo version of himself'. This slide gives context to the reference images.

Lastly, the treatment concludes with an image of a ripped out heart and a brief description stating how Mezzy wants Tracy to drag the emo version of himself out of the studio and murder him brutally, with the last shot being a close up of a bloody heart still beating.

What works well in the treatment? - The clear layout of reference images and briefly described environments work well in the treatment as it is visible for the viewer to understand and breakdown the director's ideas for the music video. The bold font used for the text also works well by making the words simple to read.

What was most effective? - The structure of having the reference images before the description is most effective as it is easy to follow the stages and process of each scene Mezzy wants to create for the music video.

Top three tips for a successful treatment

After reviewing three different treatments I have concluded that the following tips create a successful and effective treatment for a music video:

1) The simpler the better, do not over detail elements, instead be accurate and straightforward in your description.

2) Use visual references to show your inspiration to reinforce your ideas and vision.

3) Use bold text to make the written descriptions clear and make sure to have a simple background for your slides, do not over complicate them.
